Southwood Healing: The Hidden Cause Behind Your Symptoms

Perhaps you know what it is like to carry a symptom, a fear or a recurring challenge with you, and no one can tell you where it actually comes from. Very often the cause does not lie in the present, but in an early imprint stored deep in your subconscious.

This is exactly where Southwood Healing begins. I studied this healing method with my main mentor Malcolm S. Southwood in Basel, and I still work with it today. Malcolm became aware of his healing gift in 1982 and has since accompanied over 30,000 people, and in his book “You and Your Mobile Home” he describes part of this work. Southwood Healing combines spiritual insight with a clear view of the cause. It is not about resolving what lies beneath the symptoms.

I would like to show you, through two examples, which challenges can have their cause in the subconscious and how a session addresses them.

The birth process

One of the pieces of work that many people benefit from has to do with the birth process. In Malcolm Southwood’s model, the way we are born is connected to later themes in life, and a birth that was not optimal can be gently corrected in a session.

According to Southwood, a natural birth takes about six to seven hours. This is the time the soul needs to fully ground in the baby, and in which the instinct energy that mother and child need for the birth is used up. The baby feels safe and secure in the mother. It is this instinct energy that lets the baby free itself, even though leaving its safe place is an intense step. Without it, there would be no reason for the baby to leave this home.

Signs of a birth that was too fast

A person with a very fast birth (a Caesarean section or a birth under about six to seven hours) may later show certain patterns, according to Southwood. In short, the reason is that the instinct energy was not fully used up for the birth and continues to work in the body. These can include, for example:

  • asthma at night and other breathing themes
  • neck pain or headaches
  • inner restlessness and restless legs
  • unexplained fears of tunnels, small spaces and height
  • relationship themes, such as not being able to allow closeness and pushing people away
  • a strong need for movement
  • food sensitivities, for example to milk, gluten, nuts or cereals
  • fear of dying
  • little grounding and difficulty concentrating
  • as a child, falling often and being drawn to fall, for example into water
  • narrow shoulders or a hollow chest
  • dreams of a fear of dying or of falling
  • dreams of water and houses
  • bed wetting

Signs of a birth that was too slow

A person with a very slow birth (more than seven hours and up to 24 hours) has used up the instinct energy, but may be full of fear or anger from a birth experienced as traumatic. Because the baby needed a long time to come out, this fear can remain stored in the body and show up later, for example as:

  • difficulty concentrating
  • impatience and irritability towards others, for example when queuing
  • swallowing difficulties, coughing and breathing themes
  • fears such as claustrophobia or the fear of being trapped or confined
  • self-injury, for example cutting in teenagers
  • bed wetting
  • psoriasis and other eczema
  • often strong, powerful shoulders and a tense neck
  • the feeling of being under pressure everywhere, at work, in a relationship or from parents

These patterns can appear all at once or at different stages of life if the birth was difficult. There are other kinds of birth with their own patterns, for example a birth that was too early. With a child who shows one or more of these signs, the birth can be corrected in a very playful way. With an adult, in the session we go through the birth in a meditative state and replace the original image with a birth of gentle, fitting timing. In this way there is later no need to act out unused instinct energy or to protect yourself with fears and other symptoms. Many people afterwards experience that they feel lighter and freer.
Of course, such patterns can also have other causes. But if you recognise several of them in yourself or your child, a conversation in the family about your birth can be revealing.

Emotional causes of complaints

Sometimes people carry a complaint with them and do not know its cause. Often the emotional cause lies in an event from childhood. It does not have to be a big trauma. Even a small situation can be enough for an unexplained fear or tension to arise later in life.

It begins with guilt

Imagine a child who does something, and it goes wrong. This happens all the time and is usually no big deal. But if the child is truly frightened in that moment and an adult tells them to be quiet and that it is their own fault, a problem is created. Instead of releasing fear, pain and shock in the moment, the child stores them in the body and feels guilty. It only wants to be loved, so it stays quiet and forgets the incident. This is not to blame the adult, who may have been shocked in that moment too.

Later in life, as a teenager or an adult, something happens that reminds the subconscious of this early situation. This is the trigger. The subconscious wants to protect the person and invents a protection mechanism that may have worked in the original situation but no longer fits now. Suddenly the person has a symptom.

For example, a boy falls from a tree as a child and breaks his arm. Instead of being allowed to release shock and fear, he hears from his mother that he should not have climbed the tree and that it is his own fault. Later in life he develops an allergy to exactly this kind of tree, as a warning from the subconscious not to go near it. He does not remember the original event, because he does not want to be reminded of the guilt that made him hold the shock and fear inside.

In a session we take the guilt out of the situation, and in a meditative state the person remembers the event themselves. Then there are spiritual healing methods to resolve the cause by correcting what happened when someone was young. In the example with the tree, the man goes into the inner scene as an adult, takes his little boy into his arms and gives him all the love he needed back then. The shock and fear are allowed to release as well. The person leaves the session lighter and freer.

The allergy is only one example of complaints that can arise from guilt and suppressed shock later in life. Other patterns might be a fear of heights, eating disorders, back pain, chronic tiredness, panic attacks or not being able to sleep without a light. My teacher Malcolm once said, with a wink, that guilt should be the number one public enemy.

If something happens to your child, take them into your arms and tell them that you love them, no matter what happened, and let them release shock and fear in the moment. Tell them that everything is alright and that it is not their fault. If they really did something wrong, they may think about it, but take them into your arms again afterwards and tell them that you love them, no matter what happened. Children simply want to be loved.

How a Southwood Healing session works

A session has three parts. First we sit down together and talk about your concern, so think of a challenge beforehand that you would like to look at. Then we go back to the cause. And in the third part the spiritual healing work takes place. After a session, something often feels changed, as if fear, shock or guilt has lifted. Because these feelings are not who we truly are. A session can help you have more energy again for the things you wish for from your heart.

Other concerns for a session can include, for example:

  • themes connected to a birth that was not optimal, such as postpartum depression
  • complaints with an emotional cause, such as panic, postural themes, eating disorders, fears, allergies, back pain or chronic tiredness
  • physical themes such as pain, stress, migraines, whiplash or tinnitus
  • releasing foreign energies
  • retrieving soul energy after the end of a relationship
  • support with exhaustion and stress
  • themes from a past life, which happens only rarely
